Whether you’re interested in medieval architecture, local culture, or simply soaking up the atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage site, everything is literally at your doorstep in this easily accessible and walkable city.

Step outside into UNESCO World Heritage history

The moment you exit My City Hotel, you’re standing within one of Northern Europe’s most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage sites. Our boutique hotel occupies a carefully restored historical building that complements the medieval charm Tallinn is famous for. The cobblestone streets beneath your feet have been walked by merchants, craftsmen, and travellers for over 800 years.

From our front entrance, you can immediately see the distinctive red-tiled roofs and limestone walls that characterise medieval architecture throughout the Old Town. The UNESCO designation, granted in 1997, recognises Tallinn as an exceptionally complete and well-preserved medieval northern European trading city. Within your first few steps, you’ll notice the remarkable preservation of 14th and 15th-century buildings, many still serving their original purposes as shops, restaurants, and residences.

The narrow medieval streets radiating from our location lead directly to Town Hall Square, St. Catherine’s Passage, and the ancient city walls. This immediate access to authentic historic Tallinn is what makes staying with us so special – you’re not just visiting history, you’re staying within walking distance of it all in this intimate, easily navigable city.

Your walking route through medieval Tallinn

Starting from My City Hotel, we recommend beginning your exploration by heading towards Town Hall Square, just a three-minute walk away. This central square has been the heart of Tallinn’s commercial life since the 13th century. From there, you can easily reach the Gothic Town Hall, with its distinctive weather vane known as “Old Thomas” watching over the city since 1530.

Continue your Old Town walking adventure by following Pikk Street northward, where you’ll encounter the Great Guild Hall and St. Olaf’s Church. This route takes you past some of the finest examples of medieval merchant architecture in Northern Europe. The church’s spire, once the world’s tallest building, offers breathtaking views over the Baltic Sea and Tallinn’s red rooftops.

For a complete circuit, walk along the ancient city walls towards the Danish King’s Garden, then return via Toompea Hill. This route covers the essential Tallinn attractions whilst giving you a genuine feel for how the medieval city was laid out. The entire walking route from our hotel covers approximately 2 kilometres and can be completed comfortably in 2-3 hours, depending on how long you spend at each site – perfectly manageable in this compact and charming city.

Hidden gems you’ll discover along the way

Staying at our boutique hotel Tallinn location gives you insider access to discoveries that day visitors often miss. St. Catherine’s Passage, just around the corner from us, houses active artisan workshops where you can watch glassblowers, ceramicists, and textile artists at work. These craftspeople continue traditions that date back to medieval guild times.

The Kohtuotsa viewing platform, accessible via the winding Lühike jalg (Short Leg) street, offers the most photographed view in Estonia – but visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the best light. Local residents often gather here during sunset, creating a wonderful opportunity to experience Tallinn beyond its tourist facade.

The medieval Pharmacy on Town Hall Square has been operating continuously since 1422, making it one of Europe’s oldest working pharmacies – a testament to Tallinn’s unbroken commercial traditions.

Another hidden treasure is the Masters’ Courtyard, where you can sample traditional Estonian cuisine in a setting that perfectly captures the atmosphere of medieval merchant life. The courtyard’s acoustics make it a favourite spot for impromptu folk music performances, especially during summer evenings.

Making the most of your Old Town location

Your strategic position at My City Hotel allows you to experience Tallinn tourism at different rhythms throughout the day. Early mornings (7-9 AM) offer the most peaceful exploration time, when you can photograph the cobblestone streets without crowds and hear the city awakening around you. The soft morning light beautifully illuminates the limestone walls and creates perfect conditions for photography.

During winter months, the Old Town transforms into a magical wonderland, with the famous Tallinn Christmas Market filling Town Hall Square from late November through early January. Our central location means you can easily pop back to warm up between exploring the festive stalls, enjoying mulled wine, and browsing traditional crafts at one of Europe’s most atmospheric Christmas markets. Summer brings the Medieval Days festival and White Nights, when the Old Town stays lively well into the evening hours.

For evening experiences, the proximity to Tallinn’s best restaurants and traditional beer cellars means you can enjoy authentic Estonian cuisine without worrying about transport. Many establishments offer live folk music and traditional dancing, giving you an authentic taste of Estonian culture.
